Snakeheads are the worst human beings known to man.
Snakeheads are Chinese gangsters, based both in China and in the United States, who smuggle Chinese immigrants into the United States.
The price is not cheap; $50,000 a head. And the process is brutal.
Because the Chinese people who yearn for a better life are dirt poor, a small percentage of the smuggling money is paid up front to the Snakeheads. However, the collection of the balance is certain; or bad things happen to the illegal Chinese immigrants: beatings, torture, and sometimes even death.
When they arrive in America, the illegal immigrants work in Chinese restaurants, for pennies an hour. They labor in hot kitchens for 12-18 hours a day, and after work, they are chained in a filthy room so they cannot escape.
If one of them does manage to escape, their relatives in China are punished instead.
“Snakeheads” is set in Manhattan’s Chinatown, where the Italian-American mob tries to horn in on the immense profits generated by the Snakeheads’ human smuggling operation. The Italians want their piece of the action, and the Chinese gangsters resist – violently.
Thrust into the middle of this warfare is an Italian-America detective, who falls in love with a Chinese businesswoman. Together, they attempt to eradicate the villains who profit on the backs of the poor illegal Chinese immigrants.

Throughout the history of mankind, there has always been one constant creed among those scoundrels who inhabit the Underworld – crime pays.
Whether it be John Allen – “The Wickedest Man in New York City,” pimping off young girls in his Manhattan Lower East Side brothel/dance hall, or George Leonidas Leslie, “The King of the Bank Robbers,” knocking off a New York City bank, or Fredericka “Marm” Mandelbaum, all 250-pounds of her, fencing stolen good from her Clinton Street grocery store, making money in a life of crime was a fait accompli; that is, unless you get caught, which happens all too often.
Some pay back society with time in prison, other’s pay with their miserable lives, and some scoot away scot-free, never to answer for their wicked offenses against humanity.
Crime Pays: Scoundrels and Their Schemes will bring you on a seedy ride that slithers across the underbelly of American society, where every crook and criminal has their own unique gimmick to fill their greedy pockets with other people’s hard-earned cash.

Virginia Hill was a knock-around broad who bedded down the biggest gangsters of her time. It was said Hill spent more time on her back than Michelangelo did painting the Sistine Chapel. The word on the Las Vegas streets was that she was the exclusive property of mobster Bugsy Siegel, and it was plain to everyone in the know that Bugsy was just crazy about Hill.
But was Virginia Hill really a Trojan horse in Siegel’s camp; put there by the Mafia to make sure Bugsy was giving them an honest count on their Las Vegas ventures?
The answer is not that cut and dried.

Degenerate gambler and sportsman, Jacob (Bald Jack) Rose (Rosenzweig), due to a rare disease, had nary a hair on his entire body. But what Rose lacked in hair, he more than made up for with a diabolical criminal brilliance that put him “head and shoulders” (no pun intended) above the competition.
In the early 1900s, one of Rose’s competitors was fellow gambler Herman Rosenthal, a mean and snaky runt who had the reputation of being a stool pigeon, or as they say on the streets – a rat – for the New York City Police Department. Rose and Rosenthal both owned competing gambling joints in the seedy uptown area of Manhattan called the “Tenderloin,” or “Satan’s Circus.”
Rosenthal’s partner of sorts was corrupt New York City Police Lieutenant Charles Becker, who was not adverse to taking money with both hands (graft) from the Tenderloin’s gambling joints and houses of prostitution. Rose and Rosenthal both paid Becker handsomely, but then Rosenthal got the idea he was too big a man to continue to line Becker’s pockets with cash.
What happened next was called “The Crime of the Century.”

Being English I wasn’t really interested in the goings-on of the American Labour Unions or indeed the existence of Jimmy Hoffa. But I do know and love Joe Bruno’s works. But I do know of the existence of organised crime and the Mafia. I have read many of Joe’s books and cannot recall a single one that I failed to enjoy.
It is quite obvious to me that this work is very well researched and put together and certainly kept me totally enthralled.
Simply a great read!

Production information:
Cleveland mobster Danny Greene’s love for his Irish heritage, and his hatred for Italian dagos, as he called them, propelled him into a battle with Cleveland’s Italian Mayfield Road Mob for control of illegal activities in Cleveland and the surrounding area. After the death of Cleveland don, John Scalish, Greene joined forces with disgruntled Italian mobster, John Nardi. The two gangsters and their minions waged a savage street war against the Mayfield Road Mob for control of organized crime in the area.
Bombs were the weapons of choice, and soon there were so many bombings in the Cleveland area perpetrated by the warring factions that the local press dubbed Cleveland, “The Bomb Capital of the USA.”
Greene, after being approached by a smooth-talking FBI agent, decided it was in his best interest to become a canary. As a result, he sang a sweet tune to the Feds, informing them of the illegal activities of Cleveland’s Mayfield Road Mob and the Italian gangsters who ran the operation.
In the end, Danny Greene, feared Irish mobster, became what his Irish ancestors hated most – a rat.
“Mob Rats – Danny Greene” will fill you in on the gory details.

Joe Bruno’s “Mob Rats – Abe “Kid Twist” Reles – The Fink Who Took Down Murder Inc.” is yet another kill read by this author. He is out there and right to the point. No wasting words, he just tells it as it is. He holds nothing back and the pages of this book fly by in a fury. This old time gangster story is electrifying and done in a way that the reader can’t get enough. I was caught up in the real-life drama and couldn’t tear myself away from this quick read I tried.
Reles story is fascinating and pretty heart thumping. I won’t give away the details but he lived a pretty amazing life that came to a screeching halt that you just have to read about. It’s all in there! This book had me gasping out loud.
The research that Joe Bruno does is quite remarkable. I know I can always trust his stories to not only be true but to be told in his signature style of bluntness and sarcasm. What more could you ask for? I am a fan!
