Joe Bruno on the Mob – Longshorewoman’s Loose Lips Cost Her Her Job

They say loose lips sink ships. But when Margaret Dillin got diarrhea of the mouth it cost her her job.

Dillin, a single mom, makes $77,000 a year as member of Local 1588 of the International Longshoremen’s Association. There is an explicit court ruling that prohibits any union member from associating with organized crime figures, including ex-waterfront kingpin Nicholas (Nicky) Furina. Law enforcement officials describe Furina as the “central figure in mob influence that has infiltrated Local 1588 for two decades.” After his 2005 racketeering conviction, Furina was banned from the waterfront, where he had served as the hiring agent for longshoremen in Port Jersey.

“Nicky Furina still has the reputation of a very powerful organized crime figure in Bayonne,” Walter Arsenault, executive director of the Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor, told The New York Daily News.

Still, Dillin was indiscrete enough not only to casually associate with Furina, but in fact, went to a swanky 2007 Christmas party where alleged organized crime figures, including the 80-year-old Furina, ‘Pepe’ LaScala, Carlo Bilancione and Nicky Romano, all were present. Then, according to a letter written to the Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor, she constantly bragged to her co-workers about her meeting with Furina and other alleged organized crime figures.

Several of Dillins co-workers testified at Dillin’s hearing about her frequent boasts that she “broke bread” with Furina. One co-worker recalled Dillin talking about a Furina wine-tasting: “She described one time during which one or more of the wives present complained about her misbehavior,” court papers say. Dillin also blabbed about a second party where Furina provided the homemade vino, according to another worker.

As a result of Dillin’s hearing before the Waterfront Commission, a federal judge approved Dillin’s expulsion from Local 1588. She faces a hearing before the Waterfront Commission, which seeks permanent revocation of her license to work on the docks.

Dillin defended herself, saying,“These people are old. These people are in their 90s, for God’s sake. I have nothing in common with these people. If I was a gangster’s girlfriend or a gangster myself, I’d be living in a beautiful house and wearing furs and driving an expensive car. I have none of that. I’m a mother taking care of my children. I live in the attic on the third floor of a house.”

The sad part about this story is Dillin is probably telling the truth. She was at a Christmas party maybe she shouldn’t have had attended, because of the known alleged mob figures who were also in attendance. And as insecure people are wont to do, she couldn’t help but brag to her co-workers about her casual association with these same people. Then of course, there’s always a rat (the letter writer) and rats (her co-workers), who love putting the screws to someone who maybe they don’t particularly like.

This is a sad story, and the right thing to do is maybe suspend Dillin with, or without pay for a specified period of time; not expel her from the local and deny her the right to ever work on the docks again.

“This is overkill, it’s the sledgehammer approach,” said Dillin’s lawyer James Lisa, suggesting a suspension was a fair penalty.

I agree with Attorney Lisa; give the 48-year-old single mother a break.

Margaret Dillin may have shared some wine with a mobster, but says that’s no reason to be fired

Working on the New Jersey docks, she socialized with Nicholas Furina, a Genovese honcho

Margaret Dillin, a longshorewoman who has been expelled from her union local after associating with Nicholas Furina.

Too much Christmas cheer and homemade wine with a powerful Genovese gangster cost a chatty longshorewoman her union job on the New Jersey docks, the Daily News has learned.

Margaret (Margo) Dillin had pleaded ignorance to a court order barring members of Local 1588 of the International Longshoremen’s Association from associating with organized crime — including ex-waterfront kingpin Nicholas (Nicky) Furina.

But Dillin was dimed out by an anonymous letter-writer, then done in by a tidal wave of evidence — and her own big mouth.

Investigators obtained a photograph of Dillin, swathed in a black cocktail dress, inside Furina’s swanky 2007 Christmas party at a New Jersey banquet hall.

She was in the banquet area with Nicky Furina, ‘Pepe’ LaScala, Carlo Bilancione and Nicky Romano, a significantly high density of convicted racketeers and reputed organized crime figures,” Robert Stewart, the deputy court-appointed monitor of Local 1588, stated in court papers.

Several co-workers also testified at Dillin’s hearing about her frequent boasts that she “broke bread” with Furina.

A co-worker recalled Dillin talking about a Furina wine-tasting: “She described one time during which one or more of the wives present complained about her misbehavior,” court papers say.

Dillin also blabbed about a second party where Furina provided the homemade vino, according to another worker.

He overheard Dillin talking in the van … that she got so drunk that she made out with” an ex-longshoreman who was also banned from the waterfront.

Dillin was also accused of bragging about her relationship with the 80-year-old gangster and flaunting her cushy job assignments — like driving a shuttle van — over more senior and qualified union members.

The single mom earns $77,000 a year.

Law enforcement officials describe Furina as the central figure in mob influence that has plagued Local 1588 for two decades.

After his 2005 racketeering conviction, Furina was banned from the waterfront, where he had served as the hiring agent for longshoremen in Port Jersey.

Nicky Furina still has the reputation of a very powerful organized crime figure in Bayonne,” Walter Arsenault, executive director of the Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor, told The News.

Dillin, 48, claimed the allegations were inaccurate and ridiculed the idea that she was a Furina friend, comparing him to the chrome-domed dancing mascot for Six Flags Great Adventure.

These people are old,” she said, according to a transcript from her hearing. “These people are in their 90s, for God’s sake. I have nothing in common with these people.”

Former NYPD Commissioner Robert McGuire, the chief monitor of Local 1588, noted in his decision to expel Dillin that he had given “clear and unambiguous directions” to all union members about avoiding Furina and other organized crime figures.

I am required by law and the federal court orders relating to Local 1588 to do everything in my power to eliminate the influence of organized crime over the affairs of this Local,” McGuire stated.

Last month, a federal judge approved Dillin’s expulsion from the local. She faces a hearing before the Waterfront Commission, which seeks permanent revocation of her license to work on the docks.

Dillin told The News she is definitely not a mob princess.

If I was a gangster’s girlfriend or a gangster myself, I’d be living in a beautiful house and wearing furs and driving an expensive car,” she said.

I have none of that. I’m a mother taking care of my children,” she said. “I live in the attic on the third floor of a house.”

Dillin has a daughter who is a longshorewoman and is also raising a 13-year-old daughter. Women comprise about 10% of the deep-sea longshore workforce.

This is overkill, it’s the sledgehammer approach,” said Dillin’s lawyer James Lisa, suggesting a suspension was a fair penalty.

  1. The punishment doesn’t fit the crime….

  2. mike rolands Says:

This woman got what she deserves, she has tried to destroy many innocent Longshoreman at the piers for her own personal gain. There r 2 sides to every story…..u should know that. What comes around goes around.

  3. You have to know Margo to understand where this is coming from, she is white trash and has destroyed many a family with her “let me climb the ladder” bs. She is uneducated and has been using “men in power” for years, guess karma finally got the best of her.

  4. Joe, everyone who knows margo knows she used to run her mouth off all over Bayonne about her job and how she got it. Her Mother was dating some big wig There were longshoremen who have been on the docks for 30 years who got tired of her running her mouth. Yea, the punishment does fit the crime, she was told to not “associate” with them, there are guys that have familes and who have been friends with Nicky for years that had to make that hard call to not associate with him, yet she thought she was better. What kind of women wont let her daughter see her grandparents cause she doesnt like her ex-husband? there is alot more to margo than what was said inthe paper and my wife and I are glad it back fired.

  5. Leo, you are the third person to tell me the same thing about Margo. So I guess there’s something to it.

She didn’t seem to have too many friends.

  6. Leo, I must say you seem to think you know a lot ….. For starters her mother hasn’t dated a soul since her husband died in 1995… And how do you know for sure she was told not to associate with whomever? Did you yourself give her a certified letter stating that? And even funnier you state she won’t let her daughter see her grandparents…. The daughter is 14 yrs old and chooses not too….you fail to mention how Margo was physically abused by her daughters father for years,so much she was hospitalized several times and has scars all over her face and police reports up the ying yang….that might play a part in why her daughter does not want to see them or maybe it’s because any time they’ve made plans in the past the grandparents had something come up…..or when the grandparents take the other granddaughter on vacation and not her….those might just be some of the reasons. But regardless of what you or anyone thinks of her the punishment doesn’t fit the crime….. There are people in that industry who have robbed and gotten suspended, killed people while operating machines under the influence of drugs and were sent to re hab on the company’s expense, even extortion and they all get suspended. Attending a party does not mean you should be fired.
And I think since you hate this lady so much you might wanna tell her instead of hiding behind a computer….. But hey that’s just my opinion.

  7. SMH – Great dialogue. Another side of the coin.

PS – I don’t like rats, and Margo was ratted on.

  8. Whatever….poor margo this and poor margo that. You can put lipstick on a pig and it is still a pig. She damn well knew about not associating with them. She worked at the Elco and slept with the cops, worked at Robbin Reef and slept with a married fireman, now the docks…guess she has a thing for man around water. I dont care about her ex husband he is a jerk, evreyone knows that and I live around the block from her EX in laws and they seem like nice people, but how nice is a woman (MARGO) that hits or pushes an old lady (her EX mother inlaw), One a skank always a skank. Next time my wife sees her ex mother in law I will be sure to tell her what is written about her. Just to let you know, Margo uses the kid like a pawn. I wonder how the courts would feel about joint custody, that’s what I told her ex husband to do, even told him I would help with the atty. He is clean, doesnt owe child support, I grew up with him and know what he was like// I will make sure they know that their granddaughter doesnt want to see them.

  9. PS It wasnt just the picture it was her mouth, as usual.

  10. mike rolands Says:

Wait a second here, SMH u know & everyone else knows Margo did not only go to 1 party. What about the 2 party’s @ Nicky’s house ?? That’s 3 party’s that the powers that b know of. What about all the false sexual harassment charges that she had on innocent people ?? All were unfounded. What about her abusing coworkers & flaunting her mob connections @ the port ??? What about here & her daughter assaulting a senior citizen superintendent from the port ??? She even said horrible things about her daughter that works with her. Oh wait a min. her response will be….” I swear on my kids” I did not say that, which is another lie. Margo is a horrible human being that will finally get what she deserves, which in mine & a lot of her coworkers will agree she should be FIRED !!!!!!

  11. mike rolands Says:

@ Joe…Margo was & still is the biggest “RAT” down the docks….. Not only does she “RAT” on her coworkers, If she does not like you or if you don’t play by “HER” rules she will try to destroy you. There is a lot more to Margo Dillin that you know. Karma has finally caught up to her…..Thank GOD !!!!!

  12. Mike, if that’s true that Margo was a rat herself, then that changes the equation. My main beef was that she got in trouble because other people ratted on her. And I thought the punishment was a little harsh for the crime. But not knowing her, or the circumstances, that was just an opinion. I was just commenting on a news story, and was only working with the facts I had at the time.

Where I come from (Little Italy in Manhattan) there very little worse than a rat. Child molestor Rapist. That’s about it. Murderers and crooks ranked above rats on the food chain. In fact, I have a sign on my front door, right under my “Castle Doctrine Gun Permit” sign that says, “I Don’t Call 911.”

I also frown on people who enjoy other people’s misfortune. The Germans have a word for that. Schadenfreude.

I’m glad we don’t have a similar word in the English language.

  13. mike rolands Says:

I hear you Joe & respect you & your website, which I will always remain a fan of. I can go on & on about Margo… It would make your head spin what she has done, but I will let lie for now.
    Keep up the good work….

  14. bONNIE wEST Says:

IF MARGO IS SO INNO9CENT AND DOESNT KNOW ANYONE WHY DID SHE GO TO KEY WEST WITH TWO KNOWN ASSOCIATES AND STAY AT A WISE GUYS CONDO?? SMH GOTTA LET THE FEDS KNOW ABOUT THAT TRIP, SUCH A GREAT MOM HUH? PLEASE WHAT MOM PUTS HER KIDS IN HARMS WAY? IT WAS HER AUNT WHO WAS DATING SOMEONE WHO GOT HER IN THERE AND HER DAUGHTER SHE BRAGGED FOR YEARS AND WAS TELLING EVERYONE

  15. JOHN GORDON Says:

POOR FREAGIN MARGO, DDI YOU HEAR SPEAK ON AOL, MAYBE SHE SHOULD HAVE TAKEN SOME OF THAT $77,000 AND PUT IT TOWARDS LEARNING PROPER ENGLISH OR GETTING HER DIPLOMA FROM GRAMMAR SCHOOL, YOU CANT A GED UNLESS U GRADUATE GRAMMAR SCHOOL. HERE THERE IS GONNA BE A BIG PARTY WHEN SHE LOSES HER JOB. JOE, MARGO DOESNT HAVE ANY FRIENDS, NOT A ONE.

  16. LMAO it’s a shame that for some of these “different screen names” it’s the same person with different email addresses…. no matter what ANYONE thinks of a person it doesn’t clarify someone to get fired…. And out of three people who testified on her one just got charged and found GUILTY of associating with the Gambino Crime family another sat next to Margo at this holiday party and the other one got into the industry from Nicholas Furina plus a laundry list of write ups within his union, which is something Margo does not 🙂 Also the qualifications to become a longshoremen are only to hold a valid drivers license and pass a drug test along with a physical, so her having a G.E.D. is not an issue for the industry. To throw in her daughter now thats good, lol I’m going to act as if you don’t work in the industry (rem I’m just acting) and tell you that just about every person in that field of work has a family member in the industry….Example: a guy gets his son is, or his nephew, or his brother etc etc Or how about the guy in Brooklyn who got all three of his daughters in! One as a checker, one as a longshoreman and one who is hoping to become a regular union worker! Gee he must definitely be in the mafia then LMAO You’re funny, it’s like any other job if you like it you tell family or friends and then tell them where to apply….As far as who she has slept with and her prior places of employment or even places she used to hang out are also irrelevant…..Correct me if I’m wrong but even if you where the “office whore” as long as your job was getting done the way it was suppose to you can’t be fired so all of these things are personal attacks…Like I said the punishment doesn’t fit the crime….Also I have to apologize for not responding sooner, however this chat forum is not my first priority in life. As far as the party at her job LMAO Joe if you could only go down to Margo’s job and ask a few little questions hahah…
The truth will prevail it always does, its a matter of time wether it’s a long time or a short time….

    • Good stuff you wrote. I know as well as you do that the unions have been a featherbedding job for as long as unions have existed. You need a connection; then you’re in. I never belonged to a union in my life, but I have dozens of friends (acquaintances?) who have milked the union jobs for all they are worth.

  17. the fat guy Says:

what about her trip to the D.R. to meet with known organized crime figures that was set up there for secrecy purposes that she went around telling everyone who would listen i personally told her if you’re telling me you shouldn’t be keep your mouth shut you talk too much.
